Though a modern, bustling
city which is fast expanding into an
important industrial centre, Bangalore
remains one of India's pleasantest. The
central area of the city is studded with
beautifully laid out parks and gardens, wide
tree-lined avenues, imposing buildings and
lively bazaars. Situated 1000 metres above
sea level and with a very pleasant climate
it's the city to which people from all over
India and from abroad have gone to look for
work, business opportunities and higher
education. As you might expect from a city
of this nature the pace of life, like the
intellectual and political climate, is brisk
and hardly a day goes by without some new
controversy boiling over across the front
pages of its daily newspapers or into the
streets. Now the capital of Karnataka State,
Bangalore was founded by Kempegowda in the
early 16th century and became an important
fortress city under Hyder Ali and Tipu
Sultan two centuries later though there are
few remains from this period except for the
Lalbagh Botanical Gardens. Bangalore is an
excellent place to come if you're looking
for a wide range of hotels, restaurants,
films and other cultural activities
otherwise its much-vanted 'attractions' are
definitely over-rated, Bangalore means 'the
town of beans'.
