About Gangotri
|
|
After Bhatwari,
the road from Uttarkashi narrow s and
the surrounging mountains become more
severe, until the shimmering slopes
of Mt.Sudarshan(6500m) finally come
into view, towering above the small
town of Gangotri. At an altitude of 3140m,
Gangotri(sometimes called Bhagirathi),98km
northeast of Uttarkashi, is a major
center for sadhus from all over India.
It is here that the goddesss Ganga made
her descent from heaven. Shiva sat on
a linga, visible during times of low
water below the Gaurikund waterfall,
and cushioned her fall with his hair.
It was also here that Raja Bhagiratha
wokshipped Shiva at the sacred stone.

Bhagiratha Shilla: |
The present temple, near Bhagiratha’s
stone, was buit by the Gorkha commander
Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century
as a replacement for an older structure.
The temple is open only from May to
Nov. because of heavy winter snowfall.
Steps lead down to the ghat, where pilgrims
and other visitors bathe. The sheer
beauty of Gangotri’s surrounding hills
is enough to draw many visitors. However,
there are also treks in the area, including
one to Gaumukh, the melting glacier
from which the Ganga flows.
To get to Gangotri, take a bus or a
shared taxi from Uttarkashi. From the
Gangotri bus stands, buses run to: Gaunikund
for Kedarnath; Hanuman Chatti; Haridwar
; Rishikesh; and Uttarkashi.
Gangotri is located at the juncture
of the Bhagirathi(called the Ganga furtheer
south) and the Kedar Ganga rivers, which
come from the Gaumkh and the Kedar Tal
respectively. The town is situated on
the banks of both rivers, as well as
the spit of land between them, connected
by no less than three bridges. From
the bus stand, the Main Bazaar extends
up the valley to the Ganga Maa temple.
A bridge from the bus stand arches over
the Bhagirathi (the name of the river
after the two merge) to the bank where
most ashrams and accommodations are
found. Restaurants are in the bazaar.

Most young men in the town would list
guide as their profession. Since there
is no official tourist office, get several
opinions before acting and try to get
references when hioring a guide. The
only, and therefore best, map of Gangotri
is handpainted on the outside wall of
the GMVN reception office near the Gaurikund.

Sightseeing
and Treks: |
| Dedicated
to the goddess Ganga, the Ganga Maa
Temple at Gangotri is the place where
she touched earth for the first time.
In addition, legend says that the Pandavas
performed the “Devi Yagna” here to atone
the deaths of their kinsmen in the battle
of Mahabharata. Most pilgrims actually
pay more attention to the ghat located
just below the temple, as it provides
a spiritual place to bathe, wash clothes,
and perform a ritual puja. A further
destination is Tapovan, 6km past Gaumukh.
A large field filled with wild flowers,
it gives magnificent view of Shivling
peak. |
|
| The
trail to Gaumukh starts to the right of the
booking office at the bus stand. The other river
that runs through Gangotri springs to life at
the Kedar Tal(lake), 18km from Gangotri. |
