۞ Airport
The cheapest way of getting from the airport at Meenambakkam to the city is to walk to Ninambakkan rail way station (about 10 minutes) and take a commuter train into the city. The train passes through Egmore Station and the last stop is Beach Station, opposite the GPO. There are frequent trains from 4 am to midnight. If you're heading for the Youth Hostel then get off the train at Saidapet Station and take a bus from there to Adyar.

Alternatively there is an airport bus for Rs 9 which stops at the major hotels and at Egmore Station and terminates at the Indian Airlines office on Mount Rd. A taxi will cost Rs 30 plus.

 ۞ Bus
If you're spending long in Chennai and will be using city buses then a copy of Chennai City Tourist Guide (Rs 2.50) will be useful as it contains a full list of all the city bus routes. Some of the more useful buses include:

9 & 10 - Parry's Corner to Central and Egmore Stations. Other buses which pass through Egmore include 4D, 16, 17, 17D, 17E, 22, 23A, 27, 27B, 27D, 29A, 29D, 38B, 40, 43 & 71A.

11A & 18 - Parry's Corner to Mount Rd (Anna Salai). Other buses which run along the city end of Mount Rd include 3A, 4G, 5A, 11D, HE, 17A, 17C, 18, 18B, 18C, 18D, 18E, 19S, 23, 23B, 23C, 25, 25B, 27A, 27D, 36 &36A.
