The temple town of Badrinath (3133m) is the northernmost compass-point (dham) of India’s sacred geography. Once the abode of Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is the most famous of Garhwal’s Hindu pilgrimage sites, attracting the faithful during its summer season, May-Nov. Badrinath sits alongside the Alaknanda River, 305km from Rishikesh, not far from the Tibbetan border, and it serves as one of the Ganga’s twelve water channels. Its accessibility by road attracts growing numbers of pilgrims and tourists every year, who forego the austerity of a walking pilgrimage(once required) in favor of a harrowing bus ride. Badrinath can be reached bybus from Rishikesh via Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath.
